Doonya: Kathak (Classical Indian)
This class will focus on the fundamentals of basic footwork, facial expressions, arm styling, and most importantly, spinning.
Students will learn to recite simple taals, beats, and perform a given footwork pattern and spins in the same composition; frequently two or more of these elements occur simultaneously. The aim is to unify the various aspects of Kathak, so that the dancer is constantly aware of the precise relationship of the composition being danced (whether a song or a dance composition) to the rhythm cycle.
Students will need pair of special Kathak Ghunghroos (ankle bells,) as it is the most important instrument in this form of dance. Students can purchase or rent a pair of ghunghroos during class sessions for a nominal fee.
About Kathak
Kathak counts among the six major classical dances of India and is hailed as one of the most dynamic theater arts in the world.
The word Kathak is derived from katha, meaning "the art of storytelling." It is also synonymous with the community of artists known as Kathakas, whose hereditary profession was to narrate history while entertaining.
With dance, music and mime these storytellers of ancient India would bring to life the great scriptures and epic of ancient times, especially the great Indian epics - the Mahabharata and the Ramayana - and the Puranas of Sanskrit literature.
