Capoeira is a fast-growing Brazilian art form that incorporates both dance and martial arts. How so?
It all goes back to the 1800s during the slavery era in Brazil. When African slaves were in captivity, the colonists forbade them from practicing any form of self-defense training or games, as they feared of a rebellion.
With a burning desire for freedom, the slaves conjured up a dance form that was in fact martial arts in disguise. To the beats of drums, they would form circles and practice deadly fighting techniques masquerading as innocuous dancing. Thus, Capoeira was born!
In its modern form, Capoeira does NOT involve any contact. Instead, the dance focuses on intricate choreographies that incorporate acrobatics, shadow kicks, tumbling, flips and a host of other intense physical movements that look at once artistic and forbidding!
Since its introduction in the U.S, Capoeira classes have gained popularity as both a technique form and an intense workout.
Males and female—both adults and youth—are typical avid students of this original dance form.
No prior dance experience necessary.
This class is an Open-Session, which means students can enroll in this session at the shown costs or simply drop-in one class at a time for a cost of $20 without enrolling.
